Massasoit Athletics Announces Hall Of Fame Class of 2015

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit Community College Athletics Department announced the Hall of Fame Class of 2015, featuring eight inductees into this year’s class.

A total of six student-athletes, a coach and an Assistant to the Athletic Director make up the Class of 2015, which marks the third induction class to the Massasoit Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Class of 2015 features: Sue Brady (Softball, 1994-95), Cheryl Condon (Women’s Basketball & Softball, 1975-77), Marie Forrest (Assistant to the Athletic Director, 1978-2012), Violetta Gladkowska (Volleyball, 1983-84), Jim Mann (Baseball, 1993-94), Flemming Petersen (Men’s Soccer, 1986-87), Mike Russo (Men’s Soccer Coach, 1974-78) and Mark Showan (Men’s Basketball, 1987-89).

The official ceremony will be held on Friday, June 5, at the Conference Center on the Massasoit CC Brockton campus. Tickets are available for $30 each and can be purchased by contacting the Massasoit Athletics Department at 508-588-9100 x1430.

Student-Athletes

Sue Brady (Softball, 1994-95)
A two-year pitcher and infielder for the Warriors, Sue Brady helped lead Massasoit to be consecutive Colonial State Athletic Conference Co-Champions. In her two seasons at Massasoit, the Warriors compiled an impressive overall record of 64-9 and twice finished runners up at the NJCAA Region XXI Tournament.

In 1995, Brady really excelled, topping Massasoit in wins (18) and ERA (1.40) en route to earning both All-New England First Team and Region XXI All-Tournament Team accolades for her efforts in the circle. Brady also did damage at the plate, hitting .356 as a sophomore.

Brady was also an outstanding student, being named to the Massasoit Dean’s List three times and earning the Massasoit President’s Award in 1995.

Cheryl Condon (Women’s Basketball & Softball, 1975-77)
Cheryl Condon was a standout two-sport student-athlete at Massasoit, competing for the Warriors’ women’s basketball and softball programs.

On the hardwood, Condon was a two-time All-New England selection, and led the Warriors in scoring for both seasons. For her career she totaled 697 points and was also named to the Region XXI All-Tournament Team in 1977.

Condon was a pitcher and shortstop on the Warriors’ softball team for two seasons and earned All-New England and All-Tournament Team honors as a sophomore. She hit .450 in her second season and pitched over 90 innings in the circle.

For the past 28 years, Condon has served as the Elms College softball head coach and has more than 400 career victories.

Violetta Gladkowska (Volleyball, 1983-84)
One of the most decorated volleyball players in Massasoit history, Violetta Gladkowska played outside hitter for the Warriors for two seasons in the mid 1980s.

In 1984, during Gladkowska’s second season, the Warriors captured the program’s lone Region XXI Championship, advancing to the NJCAA National Championship in Miami, Fla. For her efforts on the court, Gladkowska wracked up the awards earning NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention and All-New England First Team accolades. In addition, she was named the National All-Tournament Team MVP.

Following her two seasons at Massasoit, Gladkowska finished her collegiate career playing volleyball at UMass Amherst.

Jim Mann (Baseball, 1993-94)
A former Major League pitcher, Jim Mann pitched two seasons at Massasoit, and was a key member of the 1993 NJCAA World Series Champion team.

During his two years in Green and White, Mann compiled a record of 14-1 and totaled 137 strikeouts in 113 innings pitched. The right-hander earned a win in game two of the NJCAA World Series as a freshman as the Warriors would capture the program’s first NJCAA National Championship in baseball.

Mann, an All-Region XXI selection as a sophomore, went on to get drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays following the 1994 season. He pitched in the MLB for the New York Mets, Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Flemming Petersen (Men’s Soccer, 1986-87)
A key defensive back on both the 1986 and 1987 NJCAA National Champion Massasoit men’s soccer teams, Flemming Petersen joins the 2015 Hall of Fame Class.

Petersen was key cog for the Warrior defense that posted a 48-2-4 record during his two years at Massasoit.

Along with helping both the 1986 and 1987 team’s capture NJCAA National Championships, the Warriors also won the Region XXI Championships both seasons.

In 1987, Petersen earned All-New England honors and was named the National Tournament Defensive MVP. He went on finish collegiate career at Wake Forest.

Petersen was inducted into the NJCAA Men’s Soccer Hall of Fame in 2006.

Mark Showan (Men’s Basketball, 1987-89)
A former men’s basketball player, Mark Showan embodied the true meaning of student-athlete during his time at Massasoit.

A two-time Massasoit President’s Award winner, Showan was a starting forward for the Warriors for two seasons. During his sophomore campaign, he helped Massasoit post a 23-9 record. Showan anchored a defense that allowed just 61.9 points per game during the 1988-89 season, ranking third nationally.

He was named All-New England both seasons donning the Green and White and led the team in rebounding during his freshman year, pulling down 11 per game.

In addition, Showan garnered the Massasoit Student-Athlete Award as a sophomore and went on to play basketball at Stonehill College.

Coach

Mike Russo (Men’s Soccer Coach, 1974-78)
The long-time men’s soccer coaching legend, Mike Russo, began his collegiate coaching career at Massasoit back in 1974 when he started the program for the Warriors.

Russo was instrumental in bringing men’s soccer to Massasoit and would coach the Warriors for five seasons compiling a record of 61-16-2.

In his final season in Brockton, Russo led Massasoit to a 17-4 record and the program’s first-ever Region XXI Championship in 1978. The Warriors went on to finish fourth at the NJCAA National Tournament that season.

Since Russo started the program, Massasoit has gone on to be one of the top NJCAA men’s soccer programs in the country, claiming the National Championships in 1986 & 1987 and winning 23 Region XXI Championships, including nine in the last 11 seasons.

Following the 1978 season, Russo went on to coach at Williams College for 36 years, retiring this past fall. He finished his coaching career for the Ephs with a record of 438-116-60.

Merit

Marie Forrest (Assistant to the Athletics Director, 1978-2012)
For more than three decades, Marie Forrest was a key contributor to the Massasoit Community Athletics Department.

During her 30-plus years at Massasoit, Forrest worked alongside three different Athletic Directors, and assisted in running one of the most successful junior college athletic departments in New England.
