MSOC Treks to NJ; Awaits Subdistrict Finals Opponent
The Massasoit men’s soccer team is back in postseason play as the Warriors travel to New Jersey to face either Mercer County or Ulster County in the NJCAA Division II Northeast Subdistrict Finals to represent Region 21.
BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit men's soccer team is back in postseason play as the Warriors travel to New Jersey to face either Mercer County or Ulster County in the NJCAA Division II Northeast Subdistrict Finals to represent Region 21.
Massasoit earned the top seed in the subdistrict tournament, after finishing the 2021 regular season with a 10-2-1 overall record, along with going 7-0-1 against Region 21 foes on the year.
The Warriors will battle the winner of the Mercer County/Ulster County semifinal match in the subdistrict finals on Sunday at 12 PM on Mercer's campus.
Massasoit has hung its hat on strong defensive and goalie play, having yielded only nine goals in 13 total matches. Jhonny Zamor, Matt Garcia, Jalen Mendes and Paulo Ramalho lead the back defensive line. Carlos Neto has posted a pair of shutouts and allowing under one goal per contest on the year in net for the Warriors.
Offensively, sophomore Leonardo Teixeira and freshman Nick McMahon pace Massasoit with nine goals each. Djession Fernandes tops the team in assists with 10 and a total of 11 different Warriors have scored multiple goals this season.
Mercer County, from Region 19, owns an 8-5 record on the year. The Vikings have been hot down the stretch, winners of six in a row after starting the year 2-5.
Ulster County from Region 15, has a record of 9-2 on the season and closed out the season on an even hotter stretch, winning eight consecutive matches entering subdistrict play.
Sunday's winner will travel to play at the Region 12 Champion in the Northeast District Finals on Saturday, Nov. 6, for a chance to play in the NJCAA National Championship in Wichita, Kansas from November 15-20.
