Taryn Johnson Tabbed As New Massasoit Women’s Basketball Coach
Brockton native set to coach the Warriors
BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Massasoit Community College Athletics Director Julie Mulvey announced the hiring of Taryn Johnson, a former Brockton High School and Fairfield University hoops standout to become the next head coach for the Warriors women's basketball program.
Johnson comes to Massasoit after spending the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach for Newbury College women's basketball team in Boston.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to coach at Massasoit," Johnson said. "I grew up playing in (Massasoit's) gym so it already feels like home. I'm also thankful to be working amongst a supportive staff who share the same common goals of assisting our young women in attaining their educational and athletic goals."
Prior to transitioning to the coaching ranks, Johnson was a four-year letterwinner at Fairfield University. Johnson left quite the mark in the Stags record book, scoring 1,185 career points (18th all-time) and finished sixth in program history in both rebounds (814) and blocks (186) and eighth in steals (187). She also appeared in the second most games in program history (127) during her career.
Following her standout four-year career with the Stags in which Johnson was a two-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) selection and the 2011 Fairfield Female Student-Athlete of the Year, she spent a year overseas playing for the Liepajas Papirs in Latvia. In addition she also hit the hardwood for the Brockton Lady Thunder of the Blue Chip Basketball League.
A 2008 Brockton high school graduate, Johnson played four years on the varsity squad. For the Boxers she was a two-time Boston Herald and Brockton Enterprise All-Scholastic selection and was named Enterprise Player of the Year in 2007. In her final two seasons at Brockton, Johnson earned Big 3 Dream Team Honors.
Johnson earned her Bachelor's Degree in sociology from Fairfield University in the spring of 2012.
